Why Rotate Tires On Any Car?
Tire rotation helps to ensure that all tires wear evenly and ultimately helps to extend the life of your tires. The main thing to do is to rotate the front and rear tires.
Continuously rotating the front wheels to steer the vehicle means that the outer portions of the front tires wear faster than the rear tires. Swapping the front tires with the rear tires every few thousand miles means that the front tires will not wear faster than the rear tires.
Ultimately, this reduces the frequency of replacing front tires, thus lowering the cost of replacing them.
How Often Should Tire Rotations Be Done?
Generally, garages recommend that tires be changed as often as you change your oil, which is about every 5-10,000 miles.
However, the need to rotate your tires can also be determined by your car’s performance, such as if your car vibrates at speeds above 45 mph or if one or more tires lose pressure without explanation.
If you experience any of these symptoms, you may want to discuss the possibility of tire rotation with your local garage.
Is Tire Rotation Really Necessary?
The main argument in favor of tire rotation is that it allows you to extend the life of your front tires, so replace all four tires at the same time.
However, many drivers are content to simply change the front tires when they need replacing and replace the rear tires at a later date.
Tire rotation can add a few extra miles to the life of a set of tires, but the cost of rotation can be more than the money saved, depending on whether you rotate the tires yourself, find a shop that will do it for free, or pay a shop to do it.
The real benefit of tire rotation, however, is for drivers of four- or all-wheel drive cars.
For cars that use all four wheels all the time (such as the Model 3 AWD), it is better to change all the tires at the same time to help balance the car, rotate the wheels, and set the alignment.
For this reason, rotating tires is a good idea because it means that the life of all tires can be equalized and wheel balance maintained.
How Should Tires Be Rotated?
The method of tire rotation depends on whether the car is rear-wheel drive, front-wheel drive, or all four-wheel drive (AWD or all-wheel drive).
For rear-wheel drive cars, the front tires should be rotated opposite the rear tires, i.e., the front left tire should be rotated to the rear left, and the front right tire should be rotated to the rear left. Rear wheel tires should be shifted opposite, i.e., rear left tire to front left and rear right tire to front right.
The same pattern should be used on front wheel drive vehicles; rear right should shift to front left, rear left to front right, and front left and front right to rear left and rear right respectively.
A different pattern should be used on cars where all four wheels are used for propulsion. The front and rear left tires should simply be swapped in place, as should the front right and rear right tires.
How Much Does Tire Rotation Cost?
Tire rotation doesn’t have to cost anything if you are able to do it yourself. Some places in the U.S., such as Walmart, and some auto repair shops offer this service for free, provided you bought your tires from them. If you pay, however, the estimated costs at auto repair shops vary widely from $25-75 per axle (two wheels).
For example, the Tesla service center in Rockville Md charges $75 per axle (two wheels), or $150 total, which includes rotation and balancing.
Note: Some garages offer tire changes for free if you buy tires from them.

EVannex CCI – The Best Tesla Model S Center Console Insert
- Well-known manufacturer
- Very high quality construction
- Available in three different colors
- Easy to install and remove
- Has only one cup holder
- Phone holder could be improved
The center console insert (CCI) is by far Evannex’s most popular product. It was designed for the Model S configuration without a center console. It provides hidden storage for your items, a cup holder designed to accommodate all beverages of essentially all sizes, and a phone holder to store or charge your smartphone.
The CCI can be easily inserted or removed at any time. The Evannex Model S CCI is the only center console accessory that allows you to order the exact trim and upholstery to match the Tesla Model S interior. It’s designed to blend seamlessly with the car’s other interior components and maintain its OEM character. To unsuspecting eyes, this center console insert looks like it came with the car from the factory.
It is available in three different finishes:
- Piano Black
- Carbon Fiber
- Matte Black
Let’s take a quick look at the three main storage areas offered by the Evannex Center Console Insert:
This area has a sliding lid that is securely closed with a magnetic latch. It is relatively roomy and can hold quite a few items. An additional cup holder can be added here, but this will take up most of the space inside this storage area. The bottom is made of rubber to prevent items from sliding around.
The main cup holder is designed to accommodate beverage containers of almost any size. The rubber inserts secure smaller containers, but they also work well for larger drinks. However, they can be problematic for very large drinks. Fortunately, they can be easily removed if you have trouble placing any container.
The phone caddie is a small vertical opening that resembles the phone compartments in many newer cars. Of course, it can serve as a place to store other items besides your phone and many users will end up using it is as, being a phone caddie is not very well thought out. Why? It has an awkward angle and can be hard to access at times. This is not good for a storage space that will be accessed often.
Note: The Evannex CCI was designed for Tesla Model S models manufactured between June 2012 and May 2016. Evannex CCI may not be compatible with Model S refresh vehicles manufactured after this date.
Tesla Model S Center Console Organizer with Wireless Charger
- Three separate storage areas
- Qi wireless charging capability
- USB car charger included for backup wired charging
- Only for 2016+ models
The BMZX Qi Wireless Charger for Model S features a wireless charging area and two storage compartments made of ABS plastic. This makes the device work as a center console organizer and a wireless smartphone charger.
The dual charging coils of the mat allow you to freely place your smartphone anywhere on the charging pad and provide extra charging power for faster charging. The manufacturer claims that this accessory can fully charge an iPhone 11 Max about 15% faster than the average wireless charging mat. A minor annoyance is that if you have a plus size smartphone with a thick protective case, it may be a very tight fit in the wireless charging can.
Overall, we think this is a great console organizer for Model S owners interested in an accessory with wireless charging capabilities. It blends seamlessly with the rest of the interior and brings added practicality, organization, and new technology to the vehicle.
Topfit Model S Center Console Organizer with Cup Holders
- Durable silicone material
- Variety of storage types
- Lower price while maintaining quality
- Easy to clean
- Does not look like OEM
- Only for 2012-2015 models
- Silicone texture does not give premium feel
This Center Console Organizer is made of premium silicone and was also designed with a Tesla Model S without a center console in mind. It is designed with a different approach than Evanexx’s CCI in that it is a single piece of silicone that has no covered storage area. This is reminiscent of the center console approach in many vehicles where there is no covered storage beyond the main console between the seats.
Not only can the bin be easily inserted and removed, but it is also extremely easy to clean. If it gets dusty or something spills on it, take it out, spray it with water and put it back in the car, it’s easy. The simple design and silicone material make this the easiest center console organizer to clean.
The main storage space is not as roomy as other center consoles, but Topfit offers five different storage spaces:
- Phone holder
- Cup holder (x2)
- Sunglasses holder
- Main storage compartment
Model S / Model X Center Console Organizer & Storage with Cup Holder (for 2016-2020 model year)
- For Model S and Model X
- Two cup holders
- Three storage areas
- Not compatible with the pre-2016 Model S.
For 2016+ Model S owners looking for a simple console insert, this accessory offers three different compartments, including a section for two cup holders and two additional organizational compartments.
If you’re struggling with the lack of compartments in your Model S or Model X’s glove box, this is a solid aftermarket option to keep your car organized if you’re not interested in wireless charging and need the extra cup space. Because of the dual cup holders, some storage space is compromised, but this will be very convenient for users who carry drinks frequently in their vehicles.
Center Console Drawer Organizer – Storage Compartment for Tesla Model S / X
- Can be used with other center console organizers
- Fits any model year Tesla Model S / X
- Available in black and carbon fiber
The interior of the Model S has a small storage compartment just below the center console display. From the factory, it is just a small storage compartment without a lid or cover. It is a practical storage compartment, but Tesla could have gone a bit further and included a drawer, as is the case in many other vehicles.
Fortunately, BMZX offers a useful aftermarket accessory designed specifically for the interior of the Model S/X that turns the empty space into a useful drawer that blends in perfectly with the rest of the vehicle.
The great thing about this accessory is that it can be used with other center console inserts. You can use both this organizer and a regular center console insert for extra storage and convenience.
Model S Integrated Center Console – Tesla’s Alternative
- Flexible storage
- Premium look and feel
- OEM-like fit
- Not easily removable
- Often not commercially available
Tesla also offers its own integrated center console for the Model S. This console integrates perfectly with the interior of the car and is a very stylish storage unit. Tesla’s option integrates best with the car, and that’s no surprise to us since it comes from the manufacturer itself.
This insert is the most sophisticated: Tesla uses the exact same material that already exists on the vehicle’s sliding armrest and trim. It can also accommodate the installation of Tesla’s new phone docking station.
Some of its main features are:
- One-touch operation to close the sliding over
- One-piece sliding lid in Tesla’s signature Mammoth Black color.
- Removable, curved dividers for fully customizable space
- Two retractable rear cup holders
- Side panels with high quality stitching.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Center Console Organizers compatible with any Model S?
The interior of the Model S was changed slightly for the 2016 model year. Tesla modified the center storage area between the driver and passenger seats. This made the console inserts made for the 2012-2015 Model S incompatible with the refreshed 2016 and newer interiors.
If you are looking for an interior organizer, check each product page of the accessory you are interested in and make sure it is compatible with the model year of your Tesla.
Are Tesla Model S console organizers compatible with the Model X?
The Model X was developed based on the Model S platform. Not only do they share many drivetrain, chassis, and suspension components, but the interior is also very similar in both vehicles.
The Model X is compatible with the center console inserts and organizers made for the 2016 and up Tesla Model S. If you are looking for interior accessories for the Model X, most accessories from the Tesla sedan will work on the SUV as well.
Plastic vs. Silicone center console inserts
When choosing an interior organizer, you’ll find that the vast majority of accessories are made of either a hard plastic structure or a silicone rubber-like material. ABS/plastic type materials are usually more pleasing to the eye, as they also have an outer layer with a texture that resembles leather or carbon fiber.
On the other hand, rubber console organizers are made to be easy to clean, you can wash them frequently with soap and water and the material will not degrade. A plastic console organizer will be best for most users, but if you find yourself cleaning your center console frequently and have frequent spills, we recommend opting for a silicone organizer.
Looking at all the accessories, it’s clear that Tesla’s offering could be better in every way. After all, it is the console insert that should be included with every Tesla vehicle. Unfortunately, this item has been out of stock for some time and we suspect Tesla has discontinued its production.
On the other hand, the Evannex Center Console Insert is a very strong alternative that provides almost the same OEM feel. Not to mention that its price is much more affordable, it’s easy to install and remove, and it has a variety of texture options. It’s also almost always in stock, so getting one in your hands quickly won’t be a problem. This accessory will absolutely make a huge difference when it comes to the usability of your Tesla’s interior.
